Description

Seal Pups at Play
walrus ivory, baleen
2"h x 5"w x 3.5"d

Ronald Apangalook
, a Siberian Yupik artist from the village of Gambell, Alaska created this wonderful scene of seal pups at play from walrus ivory.  The pups are carved indiviually from selected pieces of ivory and accented with baleen eyes, nose and flipper nails. The pups rest on an ivory base.

Ronald is renowned for his carving techniques be it walrus ivory or whalebone. Each piece he carves is unique and beautiful. Ronald’s Yupik name is Qaygeghutkaq, shortened to Qay, literal translation “put on top”. The piece is signed “QAY” on the bottom.
