Born 15 May 1967, Arthur Gologergen is a walrus ivory and fossil whalebone carver from Savoonga, Alaska. Savoonga is located on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea where the local economy consists largely of subsistence hunting for walrus, seals, fish and bowhead whales.

Arthur lives a subsistence lifestyle and relies on his hunting and fishing to provide food for his family as well as beautiful walrus tusks for his carvings. He learned to carve by watching his father, Ray Gologergen. His mentor, Mitchell Toolie, taught him to carve sea otters, now one of his signature subjects. His carvings are often whimsical, stylized and not overly representational.

The natural beauty of his home, outdoor experiences and interactions with wildlife inspires Arthur’s work. He is known for his carvings of bowhead whales, humpback whales, hunters and seals, sea otters, polar bears, spotted seals as well as walruses.
