Fred Trout
Fred Trout, Tlingit, began carving in high school and continued his education at the Totem Heritage Center in Ketchikan, Alaska, taking a series of classes in Northwest Coast Native Art. At the Totem Heritage Center, Fred exceled in carving and design studying with masters including Ernie Smeltzer, Tlingit and Ken Decker, Tsimshian, Jack Hudson, Tsimshian and Nathan Jackson, Tlingit. Fred earned his Certificate of Merit in Carving from the Center in 1997.
In 2003, Fred became an instructor at the Totem Heritage Center focusing on Northwest Coast design. Fred created beautiful clan designs for his friend’s regalia. He also excelled at creating, carving and painting bentwood boxes.
In addition to teaching at the Totem Heritage Center, his accomplishments include carving interior house screens in Sitka with Will Burkhart and his work on the Saxman Totem Park's Frog Wall with Ernie Smeltzer. Fred also apprenticed with master Tlingit carver Nathan Jackson when Nathan carved the Honoring Those Who Give totem pole in 1998 - 99.
Fred resides in Saxman, Alaska, a native village south of Ketchikan. His work may be found in museum collections and galleries throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. It can also be found in many private collections around the world.
