Tony Weyiouanna Sr. was born February 1, 1959 in Shishmaref, Alaska. Shishmaref is approximately 110 miles north of Nome, Alaska and lies on a spit of land along the Bering Sea.

Tony grew up surrounded by a family of very talented Inpupiaq carvers. His main influences were his father, Stephen, and his uncle and aunt, Esau and Alene Weyiouanna who were among Shishmaref’s most accomplished reindeer horn doll making teams.

Tony began carving walrus ivory at the age of fifteen. He began by making small objects such as reindeer horn dolls, ivory earrings, and ivory animals. At the age of 21 he began carving whalebone. Tony especially enjoys creating whalebone spirit masks. Tony also studied art the University of Fairbanks.

Today, Tony resides in Nome. His sons are carrying on the Weyiouanna carving traditions.
