Description

Juvenile Snowy Owl
walrus ivory, ink pigment, fossil walrus ivory, baleen
3.5"h x 2.5"w x 1.5"d (with walrus ivory base)

Floyd Kingeekuk Jr. (Qilupa), a Siberian Yupik artist from the village of Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island, created this delightful, finely carved owl. This wonderful piece is carved of walrus ivory with baleen and fossil ivory inlay creating the defining the features of the owl's yellow eyes. Floyd also used baleen for the owl’s beak and claws.

Juvenile male snowy owls have dark markings and may appear similar to females until maturity, at which point they typically turn whiter.  Carefully stippling pigment onto the surface Floyd skillfully created the unique feather pattern, detail and individual character of this young owl.

Fun notation: Snowy owls are often seen as symbols of wisdom and guidance, a welcome beacon during confusing or challenging times.
