Walrus with Crossed Flippers
Description
Walrus with Crossed Flippers
fossilized whalebone, walrus ivory, baleen
5.5"h x 8.25"w x 6.25"d
Ronald Apangalook, a Siberian Yup’ik Eskimo artist from the village of Gambell, Alaska, created this whimsical and finely carved sculpture. This delightful piece is created from fossilized whalebone. Carved and shaped pieces of walrus ivory form the tusks and inlaid rounds of walrus ivory and baleen create the eyes. Ronald also carved patterns on the back and neck of the walrus to create a texture and suggestion of the animals deep and strong grained skin.
This piece exemplifies Ronald's fine attention to detail and his sophisticated carving technique. Ronald’s Eskimo name is Qaygeghutkaq (shortened to Qay), literal translation “put on top”.
