Description

Happy Walrus
fossilized whalebone, walrus ivory, baleen
7"h x 11"w X 6"d

Lewis Iyakitan Jr., a Siberian Yupik from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska carved this wonderful walrus from a beautiful piece of fossilized whalebone. Lewis has used the natural aspects of the whalebone and carved detailed lines depicting the strong body and very thick, tough hide of this walrus. Inlaid baleen define the eyes and carved walrus ivory inserts are used as tusks.

Lewis was introduced to whalebone carving by his father and there is a significant similarity in the carving style of Lewis Sr. and Lewis Jr.’s work. This carving is inspired by his subsistence lifestyle and his connection to the subjects he hunts.
