Ice Fishing In the Arctic
fossil whalebone, fossil ivory, baleen, wood sineu
19"h x 14"w (arm extension) x 2"
base:.5" h x 6" dia

John Weyiouanna (Allockeok), an Inupiaq carver from Shishmaref, Alaska, created this beautifully carved fossil whalebone sculpture. Inspired by his subsistence lifestyle, John depicts an Inupiaq man with his ice fishing catch – possibly an Arctic sheefish from the Chukchi Sea.

The man’s face is an inlaid unique piece of fossilized walrus ivory carved by John.  He also used baleen and ivory inlay to add detail to the man’s parka. The fish is carved ivory captured with a wood pole and sinew line.

The piece is signed. Please call for price or email arcticspiritgallery@gmail.com for price or more information.
