Description

Sitting Walrus with Raised Flipper
Fossilized whalebone, walrus ivory, baleen
9"h x 9"w x 9"d

Ronald Apangalook, a Siberian Yup’ik Eskimo artist from the village of Gambell, Alaska, created this whimsical and finely carved sculpture. This delightful piece is created from fossilized whalebone. Carved and shaped pieces of walrus ivory form the tusks and inlaid rounds of walrus ivory and baleen create the eyes. This work exemplifies Ronald's fine attention to detail and his sophisticated carving technique. Ronald’s Eskimo name is Qaygeghutkaq (shortened to Qay), literal translation “put on top”.
