Description

Dancer/Drummer
fossilized whalebone vertebrae, fossil ivory, baleen, wood
10"h x 18.5"w X 8"d

This exquisite two-sided sculpture is carved out of a fossilized whalebone vertebrae by Roy Weyiouanna, an Inupiaq carver from Shishmaref, Alaska. Roy is known for creating activity scenes using ancient whalebone vertebrae with each side complementing the other.

This sculpture features a carved fossil ivory face with fossilized ivory labrets and eyes inlaid walrus ivory and baleen on each side. One side depicts a human drumming (wood stick and fossil whalebone drum) and the other a dancer with arms outstretched. The extended arms transform into animal faces with inlaid ivory and baleen eyes.

The piece is signed.
