Yupik artist Andrew Rookok of Savoonga, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, carved this wonderful whimsical walrus with his back flippers raised as if to wave. Inlaid baleen define the eyes and nostrals of the sweet little guy. Carved from new walrus ivory obtained through subsistence hunting, the piece Andrew’s signature is engraved on the bottom.
