Description

Standing Polar Bear
fosil walrus ivory, walrus ivory, baleen
6.5"h x 3"w x 2.75"d

Ronald Apangalook, a Siberian Yupik artist from the village of Gambell, Alaska, created this beautiful, finely carved work of art featuring a standing polar  bear. This wonderful piece is carved of walrus ivory standing on a fossil ivory base with baleen inlay depicting the eyes, nose, mouth and claws of the bear. The work exemplifies Ronald's sophisticated carving technique, fine attention to detail as well as his ability to integrate the color and texture of this beautiful piece of ivory in his work adding movement and texture.

Ronald’s Yupik name is Qaygeghutkaq (shortened to Qay), literal translation “put on top”.
