Description

Quirky Little Standing Otter
walrus ivory, baleen
4"h x 1.5"w x 1"d

Ronald Apangalook
, a Siberian Yupik artist from the village of Gambell, Alaska created this fun and quirkly standing sea otter from walrus ivory.  Ronald selected a beautiful piece of ivory, incorporating the color variations of the ivory and carving facial character using inlaid baleen to define the otter’s eyes and fossil ivory nose.

Ronald is renowned for his carving techniques. Each piece he carves is unique and beautiful. Ronald’s Yupik name is Qaygeghutkaq, shortened to Qay, literal translation “put on top”. The piece is signed “QAY” on the bottom.
