Emerging Seal Spirit
Description
Large Standing Otter
Fossilized whalebone, walrus ivory
20"h x 6"w x 6"d
Ronald Apangalook, a Siberian Yup’ik artist from the village of Gambell, Alaska, created this beautiful, finely carved sculpture. This wonderful piece is created from fossilized whalebone and walrus ivory. Ronald has a talent for incorporating the color and variations of the whalebone into his overall design to evoke movement and add depth to his work.
The piece depicts a human face encircled by an emerging seal seeming to rise up from the water. The human face is carved walrus ivory and inlaid ivory is also used to depict the seal’s eyes as well as for contrasting accents.
This work exemplifies Ronald's fine attention to detail, ability to work with a variety of materials and his sophisticated carving technique. Ronald’s Eskimo name is Qaygeghutkaq (shortened to Qay), literal translation “put on top”. This work is signed Qay.
