The late Ursula Paniyak, Cup’ik, created this wonderful “Chevak” doll, a style of doll making that her mother, Rosalie, originated in the 1950s and named after the Alaskan community they were from. The doll is standing in a self-assured, comfortable pose with hands behind her back, She is wearing a cotton print Kuspuk; a hooded over shirt with a large front pocket commonly worn among Alaska Natives.The fur ruff around her neck is made from Arctic fox fur. The face is pinched and sewn sealskin with eyes and teeth made from glass and seed beads.
