Mary Thomas is a Yupik skin sewer and moccasin maker from the village of Tuntutuliak, Alaska.The name Tuntutuliak in the Yup'ik language means " land of many caribou." In the rich tradition of Yup'ik and Alaska Native sewing, Mary created these child’s mukluks from caribou hide and fur, trimmed them with Arctic fox fur and lined them with colorful cotton fabric.
Master sewers from the village of Tuntutuliak, Alaska, are widely recognized for their exquisite, handcrafted fur-parkas, beaver hats, and traditional footwear. Footwear in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region, including Tuntutuliak, is deeply tied to survival and culture. Artisans craft these pieces using materials like tanned caribou hide, sealskin, moose hide, and/or fur.
