Gemma Gaudio from the western Alaska village of Hooper Bay, wove this traditional Hooper Bay style grass basket. This small tightly coiled basket has a repetitive geometric design created by weaving in dyed grass.

An elder in the Yupik community, Gemma is a true culture bearer, continuing to fish and gather greens, tea and berries, and sharing Yup’ik culture, stories and wisdom with elementary school students and youth at her church.
