This wonderful hand-carved mask is by inupiaq artist Fred Nayokpuk from the village of Shismaref, Alaska. It is made from a large piece fossilized whalebone and features an inlay walrus ivory labret. Walrus ivory with a baleen inlay is used to create the eyes.
From prehistoric times, Alaska natives living in the Berring Sea region wore labrets for personal adornment and in some instances to indicate territorial boundaries and social ranks.
