Ronald Apangalook, a Siberian Yupik artist from the village of Gambell, Alaska, created this beautiful, finely carved work of art featuring a solitary polar bear. This wonderful piece is carved of walrus ivory with baleen inlay depicting the eyes, nose, mouth and claws of the bear. The work exemplifies Ronald's sophisticated carving technique, fine attention to detail as well as his ability to integrate the color of this beautiful piece of ivory in his work adding movement and texture.

Ronald’s Yupik name is Qaygeghutkaq (shortened to Qay), literal translation “put on top”.
