Created by Haida/Tlingit carver Vic Accord, this lively mask is fashioned from red cedar and portrays the face of Dzunuḵ̓wa - Wild Woman of the Woods. The precise carving and painted facial features and accents emphasize Vic's carving ability adding character and drama to the mask.
The Dzunuḵ̓wa or Woman of the Woods is one of a large family of giants that live in the far away mountains and forests. In most legends Dzunuḵ̓wa is female, although they can be male or female. She has a pursed mouth through which she utters the cry, “Hu! Hu!” It is often told to children that the sound of the wind blowing through the cedar trees is actually the call of Dzunuḵ̓wa. She is a terrifying and threatening creature that carries a huge basket on her back into which she puts the mischievous children she captures. Although Dzunuḵ̓wa is a giant, she is easily out-witted by children, as she is not so smart and very clumsy.
