Ronald Apanalook, a Siberian Yup’ik Eskimo artist from the village of Gambell, Alaska, created this beautiful, finely carved figure from walrus ivory. The “Hunter” represents the traditional subsistence lifestyle of the people of Saint Lawrence Island. The work exemplifies Ronald's fine attention to detail and his sophisticated carving technique. Ronald’s Eskimo name is Qaygeghutkaq, shortened to Qay, literal translation “put on top”. The piece is signed “QAY”.
