Lindarae H. Shearer

Lindarae H. Shearer is a member of the Tsimshian community of Metlakatla on Annette Island, Alaska, 17 miles southwest of Ketchikan, Alaska. Born in Metlakatla, Lindarae was raised in Seattle. Washington. After a 35-year absence, Lindarae returned to Metlakatla and started weaving in earnest. She learned basketry from her aunt, Mrs. Lillian Bucher, and advanced her technique with renowned Haida master weaver Delores Churchill. Lindarae’s baskets are recognized for her unique combinations of traditional Tsimshian weaving techniques with contemporary artistry. She uses red and yellow cedar bark and almost always introduces Irish waxed linen and/or semi-precious stones and beads into her weaving for accent. She continues on in the tradition of her grandmothers while expressing her individuality as a contemporary artist.

Lindarae’s baskets are in collections including the Burke Museum, Seattle and the Alaska Native Medical Center, Anchorage, Alaska. She is a featured artist on the website “Entwined with Life: Native American Basketry”.
